What is the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)?

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) uses electromagnetic fields to identify and track tags attached to objects automatically. An RFID system includes a small radio transponder, a radio receiver, and a transmitter. When an RFID reader sends an electromagnetic interrogation pulse, the tag responds by transmitting digital data, typically an identifying inventory number, back to the reader. This data helps track inventory items efficiently.

Passive tags draw power from the RFID reader’s radio waves, while active tags use a battery, allowing them to transmit data over greater distances—up to hundreds of meters.

Unlike barcodes, RFID tags do not require a direct line of sight to the reader and can be embedded in tracked objects. RFID is a key technology in Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC).

What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?

The Internet of Things (IoT) connects physical objects embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies, enabling them to exchange data with other devices and systems over the Internet.

RFID Technology is a part of the IoT

RFID has advanced significantly over the past few decades, providing end-to-end visibility that helps customers efficiently track and trace assets and personnel to improve decision-making. In the retail industry, for example, enhancing the shopping experience is key to building a strong brand. By streamlining business processes and increasing awareness of its capabilities, RFID continues to drive growth and adoption across supply chains.

Because RFID allows computer systems to identify objects, it enables applications to become “thing aware.” This makes RFID a crucial technology supporting the Internet of Things (IoT).

The IoT is transforming how we interact with the world, relying on seamless interoperability and communication with diverse technologies. Industries like manufacturing, critical infrastructure, and healthcare are accelerating their adoption of IoT devices, a trend that will continue to grow in the coming years.
